After breakfast, drive to Tarangire national park; which of all Tanzania parks boasts of the largest number of savannah elephants. Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry Tarangire river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem – a smorgasbord for predators – and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared Oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. On drier ground you may find the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird; the stocking-thighed ostrich, the world’s largest bird; and small parties of ground hornbills blustering like turkeys. Other birds include the yellow-collared lovebird, drabber rufous-tailed weaver and the ashy starling – all endemic to the dry savannah of north-central Tanzania. Tarangire’s lions climb trees, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch of a tail. Lunch followed by afternoon game drive in this area dotted with majestic baobab trees, stately eland antelopes among other game.
Tarangire Sopa Lodge sits on a wooded hillside valley with views over the baobab-studded landscape. The lodge offers spacious rooms, a lounge, restaurant and a swimming pool set at the edge of a rocky gorge.
Return for dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Large fig and mahogany trees can be seen in the forest around the park gates and to the south area acacia woodlands. The lake and the surrounding area are home to over 300 bird species, including flocks of migratory flamingo. During the dry seasons, the Lake waters recede exposing large grass covered areas.
After game drive in Lake Manyara, depart to Karatu to arrive at your lodge in the evening.

Covering an area of 14,763 square kilometres, the world famous Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges. It stretches as far as Lake Victoria to the West. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning ‘endless plains’. The park’s vegetation ranges from the short and long grass plains in the south, to the acacia savannah in the centre and wooded grasslands concentrated around the tributaries of the Grumenti and the Mara rivers in the park. The western corridor is a region of wooded highland and extensive plains reaching the edge of Lake Victoria. In the early morning and evening light, the Serengeti landscape is stunningly beautiful. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, including more than three million large mammals. It is the sanctuary of an estimated four million different animals and birds. Wildlife that roam the vast park include lions (the adult males of Serengeti have characteristic black manes), cheetahs, hunting dogs, Savannah elephant, Cape buffalo, topis, warthogs, hunting dogs and spotted hyena among others. Mark Twain once wrote that ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’. For the most part, it’s true: Mauritius is rightly famed for its sapphire waters, powder-white beaches and luxury resorts. But there’s so much more attraction to Mauritius than the beach, and it’s the kind of place that rewards even the smallest attempts at explorationere’s hiking in the forested and mountainous interior and world-class diving and snorkelling offshore. There are boat trips to near-perfect islets and excursions to botanical gardens and colonial plantation houses. Mauritius is a fabulous culinary destination with great wildlife watching thrown in. And the real Mauritius away from the beach resorts – a hot curry of different cultures and quiet fishing villages – is never far away.
